Focus On Improved Entrepreneurial Spirit to Generate Higher Taxes

During a recent talent alignment seminar Gregg, a Kenyan of British origin shared some interesting experiences. The non-governmental organizational executive had proceeded abroad on a month’s business trip. Alongside, he temporarily delegated his responsibilities to Monica, his wife, who is also a colleague at work. But upon his return, Gregg was disturbed that operations had not been as smooth as he could have expected.

“At home, the children were overly excited upon my return. I learnt from them that the mother was unusually stressed, every working day, during my absence. Further, routine tasks that I have always executed with ease presented great challenges to Monica, as I also came to understand. Mind you, Monica is well trained in these areas that now presented difficulties to her, during my absence. Thank you for helping me particularly, to understand the situation and especially the fact that we are all dissimilar and respond differently to varying circumstances, “Gregg volunteered.

Apparently, there is this assumption that we can each match one another in executing various tasks as long as we are trained and practically exposed to the same. We can for example handle accounting tasks with ease in the workplace, as long as we acquire the right training and exposure. However, that is not the case as Gregg had just learnt.

Actually, we are all different, irrespective of our gender orientations. You will find a man who can easily be outperformed by a lady in such tasks as accounting, law, journalism or any other. Equally, you are likely to find a man who will outperform ladies in nursing, cooking or such other tasks that are generally associated with the feminine gender. Why does this happen?

Genetically, we are each aligned to either logical thinking orientation or creative/imaginative thinking. Logical thinkers are able to comfortably handle repetitive tasks, whereas creative thinkers find great satisfaction dealing with tasks that are associated with dynamism. The moment we fail to recognize these disparities, especially at the early stages in life, we end up in what is known as career misalignment. Sadly, this challenge accounts for about 80% of those in either formal or informal employment.

The failure to recognize these orientations could yield tragic results. It becomes the genesis of adopting a copy and paste culture. We end up doing what is commonly done by everybody else. Creativity and innovation become suppressed. The end result is inhibited growth and progress for not only individuals but also business, as well as the general economic environment.

Around the turn of the Century meanwhile, entrepreneurship development was recognized by bodies such as the World Bank, as the global engine of poverty eradication through employment and wealth creation. Global development through supporting national governments was no longer sustainable, especially on account of graft and other inhibitions. Alongside, support through non-governmental organizations had developed its own challenges as well.

Helping entrepreneurial oriented individuals to grow their own businesses, thus creating employment as well as wealth became quite attractive. Likewise payment of taxes in support of   government’s activities became an eventual obligation for all. Alongside, efforts were fast-tracked aiming to continually improve the business enabling environment.

Currently, the entrepreneurship activities contribute to 45 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), in our country.   But, is everything being done towards harnessing and improving the environment for growth of business? Are individuals being adequately empowered with skills and attitudes that enable them to continue unleashing their full potential, particularly through creation and growth of business?

The answer is difficult to fathom. As long as the education system continues producing graduates that are largely inclined towards formal employment, we are yet to achieve the desired level of entrepreneurial spirit. Actually, it is difficult to achieve high levels of entrepreneurship spirit as long as we are not helping individuals towards understanding their personalized orientations, as they continue acquiring new knowledge through the education system.

Further, we are not encouraging growth of entrepreneurship spirit as long as we are unable to inculcate the right values towards money and work.  The latter needs to provide meaning in our lives and should therefore be the reason for living. That may only happen when work is rewarding and exciting in equal measure. What is this all important entrepreneurial spirit?

This is a mindset that helps people to maintain a positive attitude and optimism about all possibilities in life; take calculated risks knowing that the same can lead to success or failure; be constantly in tune with personalized passion and also ready to execute their ideas, while at the same time continually questioning themselves on ways of doing things better.

In that spirit, it is possible to live without the mindset of urgently amassing as much wealth or money as possible, especially when unhappy with the processes of acquiring the same. More still, work may not be about tenderpreneurship, where the main aim is to maximize on profits, particularly from public institutions.

Instead, work should be about pursuing and perfecting what we excel in and eventually creating rewarding businesses or careers, out of the same. It is only then that we can create sustainable competitive advantages that are likely to help us in our entrepreneurial ventures or careers.  Indeed, we are likely to continue creating constant value for the improvement of the welfare of humanity, and reaping invaluable benefits from the same.

Any other way will lead to us towards becoming victims of the dictates of the society or the forces of change. The situation becomes terrible particularly in a highly competitive environment that is subject to volatile global dynamics, coupled with disruptive technological advancements. Incidentally, is the government participating in or embracing these thoughts and ideas?

They need to know that the continued empowerment of the masses increases the chances of generating wealth, which eventually translates to higher taxes payable to the government. Besides, persistently empowered population will have reduced demands from the government, thus leading to increased allocation of resources to infrastructure and other development needs. Evidently, it would be a win-win situation for all, if every effort is focused towards continued alignment of the human capital, aiming to continually harness the entrepreneurial spirit.
