Need to Revisit Our Personal Success Strategies in 2016

As we each reflect on and re-align our personal success strategies for the New Year, we may need to keep the November 2015 visit by the Pope in perspective. Thankfully, Pope Francis, the head of 1.2 billion Catholics honoured our country as his first stop on the African continent. During his three day sojourn, the Pope did not conceal his distaste for our negative culture of materialism that is not supported by positive work ethics.

Without antagonizing any of us, including the government, the Pope kept throwing soft barbs as he mentored against corruption, greed, land grabbing, negative ethnicity and other vices that continue bedeviling our country. He particularly pointed at the need for reflecting on our value system as well as environmental protection. “Values are never quoted in the stock exchange,” said the Pope.

Should all these matters raised not be of grave concern to each one of us, even as the government continues conceptualizing and executing top down measures of reversing the worrying trends? We may obviously reap immense benefits, if we can each embrace moral-oriented approaches towards transforming our challenged value system. As Mahatma Gandhi once insinuated, “you are the change that you want the world to be.” Instinctively therefore, change must start with each of us as individuals.  Remember that many individuals make teams, which in turn form organizations. Do the organizations not eventually form nations?

Imperatively therefore, we can’t just sit and wait for the government to bring the change that we want to happen in our lives and our country. Where then should we start the process of making our country a better place to live in, as we focus towards the New Year 2016?

Firstly, we must each reflect on who we are and our purposes in life. Certainly, nobody came to this world just to occupy space or specifically acquire personal wealth. Instead, we were each endowed with adequate natural power of contributing to the improvement of the welfare of humanity, even as the wealth builds up. We should therefore ask ourselves or find out what role we each need to play. That will no doubt lead us to our reasons for existence, thus our personalized missions. Only when we understand our missions can we effectively chart our various courses in life.

Secondly, we each need to understand our visions in life. Based on our purposes, what do we need to achieve in the immediate and medium future? Towards what direction in other words should our purposes lead us, in the medium term?

Thirdly, there is need to be guided by periodical goals, which may be isolated into daily, weekly, monthly or even annual  goals.  The same will continually inspire us into action every day we wake up to face the world around us. Nonetheless, the goals need to be SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound) for them to be inspiring enough.

Fourthly, the whole process so far, needs to be supported by guiding values. These are strongly held believes that help one to distinguish between right and wrong. Obviously, positive values will be desirable in this case. More still, these values may be derived from positive natural attributes that are expected of each of us. They are in other words as natural as night follows day and include examples such as trustworthiness, respect and fairness amongst others.

Fifthly, the alignment continues shaping up if supported by objectives or pathways of achieving the desired goals that need to be clearly defined. If one intends to travel to Mombasa for example, there are numerous alternatives of achieving that goal. It could be by air, railway transport, driving, public means or simply riding to the destination.

Sixthly, the whole process needs to be supported by plans of action, else known as strategies, which should support every one of the goals and/or objectives. Again, going to Mombasa will call for determination of the means of transport, timing, booking for the same and eventually travelling as planned.

Lastly, it pays to conceptualize some personalized rules or guidelines that help in ensuring that the personal strategy is always on course. One may for example determine the time for waking up, reporting to work, sleeping time and social interactions amongst others.

Apparently, a similar approach is applicable to business entities. Indeed, a business is perceived as an artificial person that comes to life upon operation of the requisite legal statutes.  The key benefit of this approach to each of us is that one does not have to charge at life like a rhino.

Rather, it becomes a planned system of doing things, whereby the outcomes are largely pre-determined. Also, it is possible to identify challenges along the way and take corrective measures, before becoming overwhelmed. Further, it becomes easy to continually identify and adapt to desirable change.

This personal success strategy approach may not be familiar to all, given that it has not been inculcated to learners, as they progress through the school system. Nevertheless, it may now be inevitable, if we aspire to root out the genesis of most of the challenges experienced in the society, while at at the same time achieving our desired as well as deserving successes in life. Notably, most high achievers are known to have been able to identify their purposes or passions, then aligned and pursued them relentlessly.

The resultant empowerment may be inevitable for students, as they transit through the school system, if they expect to be adequately prepared for life. More still, it will be possible for them to continually adapt to desirable change, especially in a dynamic world.

The good news is that these approaches can be learnt and implemented even by those who may not have accessed them during the schooling process. Most importantly, discovering personal purposes or passions must be the starting point of this thinking that is now imperative during this dynamic and highly competitive 21st Century. Once, properly aligned and focused, we shall no doubt be endowed with abilities of identifying and taking full advantage of the opportunities arising during the year 2016 and beyond, not only for ourselves, but also our employment situations, whatever the industries.
