Those who Focus Towards Helping the Society, End up Remaining Continually Relevant over Whole Lifetimes

When invited to give a short speech, I obviously did not forget to extol the virtues of continually acquiring new knowledge. Above all, I praised the graduate for obtaining some unique form of training, which will certainly add value and therefore greatly help the society. I also praised the lady for gaining American oriented education, which I am familiar with. Actually, I insinuated that the education holistically prepares students and in the end, are able to view the world just like an eagle does – strategically identifying opportunities from up there in the skies.
Further, I commended Kamash for coming back home armed with unique abilities of identifying and exploiting opportunities, here at home. In any case, the land of opportunities is equally endowed with threats as we all know. Nonetheless, Kamash must now develop the passion and art of helping the society to solve its challenges, rather than the approach of seeking help. This latter order of doing things comes with its own challenges of being expected to appreciate the favours. Obviously, you know what next.
Turning to the youthful guests, I implored upon them to embrace an attitude of identifying their unique attributes and following the same with regard to their careers. Indeed, the power to succeed in whatever we want to achieve in life, lies within us and not outside. I shared with them the insinuations by a famous motivational speaker and author (Jim Rhon- May God continually rest his soul in peace).
He used to say that only 10 % of the members of the population do things differently from others. They are driven by the abundance mentality, which advocates that there are enough opportunities for everybody, as long as people follow their unique orientations. These are the people who bring change to the society. Indeed, they are the Steve Jobs of this world.
On the other hand, 90% of the population does what everybody else is doing. The same leads to an attitude of scarcity mentality. Of-course that breeds a copy and paste culture, which in unison, all the youthful listeners agreed, is highly prevalent. That naturally leads to the negative cultures that we are always experiencing in the society. At this juncture, I asked the youthful listeners whether they are unique in their own ways. They all hesitated but, immediately thereafter, acknowledged that nobody is everybody.
Finally, I turned to the members of generation X (where I belong), who were also listening keenly. I had something to tell them as well. I reminded them that I am a trainer of adult learners. The same are difficult trainees because they have preconceived mindsets, which are difficult to change.
But largely, it is not their fault. They simply ‘do not know and do not know that they do not know,’ something that quite amused all. (Incidentally, this is the first level of learning also referred to as the state of being unconsciously incompetent). That scenario as I explained breeds the occurrence of change resistance, even if passive, especially in a rapidly changing world. Occasionally, this brings conflicts with the youthful members of the society. Any recourse?
Ideally, we all need to keep updating ourselves. I instantaneously brought out the example of a 97 year Australian man (Alex Stewart), who graduated with a Masters Degree in Nursing on 4th May 2012. I informed the attentive listeners that the Mzee, now recognized as the world’s oldest graduate, had acquired his first degree in Bachelor of dentistry in 1936, when none of us seated in the function was alive.
The old man had also obtained a law degree at yet an advanced age of 91 years. I continued further and informed the listeners that the old man’s learning motivation is that, “it is never too late to broaden the mind and make new friends,” as those who had read the story already know. ( Ideally, a continually challenged brain depreciates by only 3% over a whole lifetime).
Finally, I ended my impromptu presentation by telling everybody to be remembering of a guiding philosophy picked from one of my favorite authors. Actually, “you can get whatever you want in life if you can continually help as many people as you can to get what they want,” says he.
But, as I walked away from the rostrum, the emcee seemingly felt that we need to retire and give way to the youth, at some stage. Even though, I intimated that we should at least remain relevant, I could still have added something more, had I known that the resistance would continue, even after my very passionate persuasion.
Needless to belabour, I would have easily recited the experience of Judge Wesley Brown, who died in office in January 2012. At 104 years, he was still serving in Arkansas City, USA and was thus recognized in the Guinness Book of Records as the World’s oldest serving judge.
Fundamentally, those who follow their passions and use the same to help others end up forgetting about retirement, but still remain continually relevant in the society, throughout their lifetimes. May you have a great helping week, will you?
