How Well Are You Prepared For The New Light Expected To Shine In 2013 and Beyond?

A story is told of one woman whose homestead was situated on the side of a steep hill. This hill had during the better part of a lifetime completely blocked her enjoyment of sunlight. Nevertheless, she believed that through the power of prayer, she could one day enjoy this sunlight, right in her homestead, like those others that were living elsewhere.
Thus, the lady kept praying religiously, but to no avail. She invited pastors and other religious people to join in the search for divine intervention. Majority thought that her prayers had no chance of fulfillment, thus lost hope. They even kept discouraging the faith filled lady from her crusades, but without success.
Unknown to the lady and everybody else, there was a road under construction, which by coincidence had been planned to pass nearby. As the construction progressed; the troublesome hill was one day, surprisingly flattened in order to give way. Seemingly by default, the lady’s prayers were heard. The hill barrier was no more. This led to the lady’s full enjoyment of the long desired sunlight alongside many other benefits.
Similarly, the government has in the last few years been on overdrive developing infrastructure, throughout the country. Major roads have been under construction, far and wide. A good example is the 50 Km Thika Superhighway, which has not only changed the landscape of the hinterland, but also the economy, hopefully for good. Bypass roads and even a railway line have also been constructed. They have all opened up the areas that they have traversed through.
Moreover, the Lamu Port project has already taken off ground. The same is expected to serve Lamu Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET). This corridor will be Kenya’s second transport and infrastructure project when completed. The other one is obviously the existing Mombasa port and Mombasa – Uganda transport corridor that passes through Nairobi and much of the Northern Rift.
The new project will among others incorporate, a standard gauge railway line to Juba (capital of South Sudan), road network, oil pipelines (Southern Sudan and Ethiopia), oil refinery, three airports and three resort cities of Lamu, Isiolo and Lake Turkana shores. Largely, this Lamu corridor will serve the arid and semi arid areas of Kenya. They are known to be least developed perhaps based on their hostile weather and sometimes difficult terrain. Further, the areas have probably not presented the ability to support viable economic activities.
More still, the new constitutional order has brought new developments especially through development of the nation into counties. Allocation of resources will no longer be centralized in Nairobi. Rather, even remote areas of the country will be spoilt of opportunities of changing the national landscape and economy too.
Like in the case of the lady whose enjoyment of sunlight was blocked by the neighborhood hill, many more Kenyans are continually getting exposed to modernity. Forget that there are elections around the corner. Institutions are now controlling national direction leaving politics to largely play supervisory roles, thus continually making politicians less domineering.
Incidentally, modernity comes with great opportunities and threats at the same time. Threatened are those businesses that were benefiting from huge chunks of the national budget courtesy of closeness with the government seat in Nairobi. Safe for ministries such as Office of the President, Internal Security, Defense and Foreign Affairs, major national responsibilities will now be offloaded to the counties.
Nonetheless, desirable change will not just happen. There will be need for great paradigm shifts with regard to leadership and management of resources. New governance structures will also be inevitable in 2013 and beyond. Certainly, it will not be anybody’s wish that challenges and not so desirable cultures be transferred from Nairobi to the counties.
That is why we will all need to demand proper management of the devolved resources. Though we will not all be part of the new management structures, we will nevertheless be required to take part. How? This will easily happen if we can forthwith transform into new mindsets that recognize “mali yetu” on all public and institutional interests.
Heartfelt congratulations to those who have quickly realized how empowered we have become, courtesy of the new constitution. Needless to elaborate, a number of citizens have gone to the now rejuvenated courts on matters of public interest and won convincingly.
In the meantime, the extent to which we are capable of exploiting the opportunities galore that are linked to ongoing changes, has never been as crucial. Actually, there will be innumerable spin-off effects emanating from the transformation. Whole chains of businesses will emerge, driven by emergence of 47 mini governments.
Needless to enumerate one by one, there will be numerous new or expanded jobs and business opportunities, scattered throughout the freshly rejuvenated Republic of Kenya. All of them will be targeting the satisfaction of new or expanded demands, as the mini governments assert their presence, and at the same time set their social development agendas. Are you seeing the opportunities as yet?
Whether yes or no, there are some concerns worth noting. Are we all as individuals and organizations strategically positioned for the inevitable paradigm shift actions? Can we all confidently brace for the imminent opportunities, and at the same time keep requisite threats at bay?
Ideally, we need to be continually empowered and strategic in approach. Most of the situations will demand new skills and attitudes. Furthermore, consistent reaping of full benefits for the long haul, demands that we all be driven by our distinctive competencies. It is only then that we shall enjoy the new light, without fear of having it extinguished, even before the gains are fully entrenched. Will you allow the new light to shine upon you in this New Year and beyond?
