Mastering and Minding Our 4 Natural Intelligence’s Is Crucial To Fulfilled Living

By Mwangi Wanjumbi, Newtimes B. S. Chief Trainer/Consultant

It is still in the early days of 2013. Not, surprisingly, many are yet to fully recover from the moods of Christmas and New Year festivities. No doubt, they were enjoyable and relaxing for the majority. Nonetheless, there are always two sides of any situation in life. Indeed, opportunities and threats must somehow go hand in hand. Thus, it is not surprising that many may have enjoyed at the expense of punishing their pockets in the New Year. But, that is self inflicted pain, which we need not delve into as such.

Alongside, there are those who enjoyed to the extent of threatening their own health. These ones have naturally got something to worry about. I am particularly referring to those who may have earned themselves a few kilos added to their body mass, which they may now be finding difficult to shed off. Worse still, some may have to stock their wardrobes afresh, therefore being agonized all the more. In fact, it is difficult for anyone to be comfortable in the same outfits after putting on some 20 kilos within a span of 2 months. Have you heard of such a scenario? If not, take my word. It has happened right in our midst.

Personally, I would not pride myself as a very fit person. But, had I not been trying to stay healthy through working around my genetics, maybe things could be different. Most likely, I could become a little hefty for my liking and health too. Nevertheless, I have over the years come to realize a few facts about life.  Occasionally, I have given hints about them through  writings. The same are also part of my stress and change management training sessions, whenever possible. Apparently, I have now decided not to take those facts lightly any more.  Why?

There are complaints galore about emergence of serious lifestyles oriented challenges. The complaints are widespread in the print media, social media, work situations, social circles and even social gatherings.  Indeed, there is never a shortage of complaints on stress related ailments, obesity and many more. In that light, we need to realize the existence of 4 attributes that control our lives tupende tusipende, wherever or whoever we are and whatever we could be doing.

Firstly, our lives are controlled by our physical intelligence’s mostly referred to as PQ or physical quotient. It is about our bodily functions. We have no control over how our heart, liver, lungs, kidneys and other organs function. Nevertheless, we can influence them through remaining physically active either working or doing regular exercises as well as healthy eating.  Realistically, any stoppage of the physical intelligence’s could lead to our immediate expiry.

Secondly, we are controlled by our emotional intelligence’s (EQ). These could easily be described as matters of the heart. They control the feelings about ourselves including how we relate with the issues, people and the world around us. Notably, it is said that more 80% of people in hospital beds are victims of emotionally induced illnesses (EIIs) that got out of hand. Actually, you can take this to the bank for safekeeping.

Thirdly, we are controlled by our spiritual intelligence’s (SQ). It is about the relationship between us and the powers associated with the universe. It does not matter the religions that we each subscribe to. It is this intelligence that controls our strongly held believes, therefore value system and conscience. All these attributes help us to make choices therefore vital decisions as we progress in the journey of life.

Fourthly, we are controlled by our mental intelligence’s commonly referred as the IQ. Here, it is not about the measure of IQ largely related with our DNA, as may be commonly known. Instead, it is about the extent to which we challenge our minds through reading (not necessarily learning). The mind is at home when fed with information from magazines, novels, motivational materials or even structured learning process. Incidentally, a busy mind remains young and energetic. The same impact radiates to the rest of the body.

Ideally, these four intelligences work like a conveyor belt. We are therefore duty bound to ensure that they are always balanced. That way, we will easily earn ourselves tickets to healthy and rewarding lives that are free from stress and other related challenges as already explained.

Meanwhile, did you ever realize that continually enriching our mental intelligence’s, through learning slows down the aging process, or at least contributes to aging gracefully? You had better know this, if you don’t.

A few centuries ago, Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company intimated that, “you are old at 20 if you stop learning, but young at 80 if you continue learning.” Actually, that may not be gainsaid.  Further, we may perhaps need to keep remembering the exploits of Allan Stewart, an interesting Australian citizen. At 97, he became the world’s oldest graduate in May 2012, when he obtained a Master of Science degree in nursing. At 91, he had acquired a law degree. At 22 years, he had graduated with a bachelor of Dentistry degree thus spending the better part of his life as a dentist. Moreover,  be aware that a mind challenged through learning depreciates by only 3 % over a lifetime, as advocated by experts in human psychology.

Thus, if you are retired from learning, you may need to revisit your stand on this, in 2013 and beyond. More importantly, you need to work towards balancing the 4 intelligence’s for a more fulfilling life. For now, the clock is ticking. So, wait no more. Take proactive action.
