Still Pondering on the Best Choice of President, As We March Towards March 4th 2013?

Immediately the American nation concluded its Presidential elections in November 2012, I penned an article on electioneering lessons. The same may now be an inevitable read for every forward looking Kenyan. The piece titled “Great lessons on co-existence between electioneering and economic progress from the American experience,” is particularly important as we march to the March 4th national elections. This piece outlines the American experiences and how they relate or could be replicated to our own situation.
Coincidentally, the lessons seem to have been taking root even if inadvertently. That is despite the fact that they may not have been put in the mainstream media. Nonetheless, it is difficult to ignore the multiplier effect of a site, which receives at least 3,000 visitors every day of the week. More still, all the uploads are within one hour, captured by Google and circulated widely to numerous social media outlets. (You can check the visitors’ counter for confirmation).
Nevertheless, the core message of the November article was and still is to implore upon Kenyans to promote successful co-existence between electioneering process and economic advancement. Notably, we have in cycles of every 5 years had our economic agendas sacrificed at political alters. That makes the main preoccupation of the executive, after every general election to become only about reviving the economy. That is ironically, from the ICU status that is orchestrated by bad politics.
Upon graduation to the high dependency unit (HDU), there has been a tendency of the same economy remaining sick, though adamantly stable in the same status. But, things have continually gone haywire, once again at the onset of the next elections. Have these not been our experiences especially between 1992 and 2002? Even after the change of guard and great economic strides in the following 5 years, the progress still became victim of the political machinations of 2007. Can any nation develop under such circumstances?
Amazingly, these primitive cycles seem to be no more. Our new constitution that was promulgated on August 27th 2010 takes much of the credit. It has given renewed hope and direction to our nation. Further, we have now become a nation of institutionalized management and leadership. In particular, the institutions are now largely independent from the big man syndrome.
More still, the nation’s vision 2030 delivery secretariat board has now taken charge of national infrastructural development. In addition, management of the nation has been decentralized from Nairobi to the 47 counties spread in all corners of the country. Essentially, future presidents may largely become ceremonial figures, rather than the all powerful mortals that we had been used to. We need to give some credit to the era of coalition government, which has now become part of our political system. Indeed, we learnt some veritable leadership lessons from the same.
More importantly, all indicators are that Kenya’s economy has never had better prospects than is now evident, as we await the March 4th elections. Top of the indicators include the activities at the Nairobi stock exchange. The stock trading index continues rising from the range of 3000 to more than 4,000 points in the last few moths.
Alongside, the Central Bank has continually reviewed downwards; the base lending rate from a one time high of 18.5% in the recent past to the current 9.5 %. The price of fuel has been largely stable going up or down by not more than KES 2 per ltr in the past few months. The Dollar rate has also not changed radically as is the case with inflation. Seemingly, anybody still withholding progress, while waiting to see the country’s direction, needs to wake up to these realities, before it is too late.
Meanwhile, another great lesson that is worth mention is the impact of the highly publicized and all important presidential debates. Over the years, we have been largely used to presidential candidates talking to (or at) us, especially during televised campaign and other sessions. Rarely have we been exposed to the human side of our prospective leaders. Like examination candidates, the 8 presidential hopefuls were stretched to answer questions and explain their standpoints or tear into or at one another, in the full glare of millions of Kenyans.
All these unique examinars were glued to their TVs whereas others were keenly listening through their radios. Some more were glued to U-tube, thus giving everybody a chance to comprehend the personality and other qualities of each of the presidential candidates. That fully exposed the 18 million plus voters most of whom are eagerly waiting to decide on March 4th 2013. How did this influence these unique judges?
Indeed, many Kenyans had an unprecedented opportunity that will now enable them to make informed choices. Ideally, everything about us communicates. The way we talk, walk, dress or even eat actually explains our expected behavior and personalities. On the other hand our body language most often speaks more than the spoken message.
In fact, one could easily discern the nature of leadership expected from each of the candidates. From where each of us was sitting, we must have come up with future comedian president (s), dictatorial president(s), servant leader president (s), manager president (s). The latter is about a president (s) who may likely practice managerial skills more than the much needed leadership or blend of the two.
Incidentally, one of the factors that distinguish between managers and leaders is that the former follow rules whereas leaders make the rules as circumstances dictate. Perhaps, we may for now need a president who can easily combine all the 4 qualities as and when deemed necessary. No doubt, this may be necessary as we continue learning and customizing the best practices from where democracy is well embedded. But, whoever we choose must allow our will to prevail as the economy continually prospers. Naturally, that will not be asking too much. Or what do you think?
