Business Should Exist Successifully Despite the Volatile Forces of Change
If you play any role towards driving the strategic direction of the business/organization that helps you put food on the table, as well as meeting your other needs, I have some very good news for you. As you may know by now, I am an avid reader, trainer, researcher and writer. Indeed, I now realize that I have continuously and even subconsciously been putting the power to read (as was conferred), where it rightfully belongs – using the same to add value towards the improvement of the welfare of humanity.
Anybody who doubts this will be invited to figure out what I could have been doing, through some interventions such as shouting my voice hoarse, discussing business issues through an FM radio station (between 2006-2010); appearing on KBC Television discussing entrepreneurship development when the same was seemingly a vocabulary from the west. (Indeed, entrepreneurship was perceived to best describe the work of hawkers, shop owners and others who were in their vocations, because they could not fit in the formal employment sector).
In addition to these discussions, I one time conducted a now published international research on entrepreneurship development, which I was invited to present in an international entrepreneurship conference, whose theme was “Fostering Entrepreneurship and SMEs in Africa. Besides all this, I have alongside been providing innovative training solutions to numerous organizations and also advised our government on the implementation of the Youth Enterprise Development Fund. Furthermore, I have written broadly in the daily and periodical print press and blogs, all the time focusing on matters business.
During years 2007/8, I penned an incisive bimonthly column titled entrepreneurship thoughts, in one of the then leading business magazines. In the recent past, I have been back at the print media with a strategy column in the SME Today Magazine. If you are in business and skipping this magazine, then you could be missing in action.
The sad news of those days is that I seemed to have been talking some unusual language to people who were busy, either safeguarding their formal employment jobs or sometimes simply moonlighting to make a few additional bucks. Alternatively, those in self employment were complacent with the then standard ways of doing business – accumulate savings, open shop, stock and wait for or simply invite customers to come and buy, possibly some imported merchandize from Dubai.
The alternative was to provide services through installing some then innovative technology from the west. Say, state of the art laundry machines, photo studios, print technology and many more. These were followed by inviting all our relatives and all known contacts for a start – not bad though, but could that sustain profitable business operations?
As the information era got entrenched, globalization too continued becoming a major factor in business. Of much more concern is the technological advancements that affect all spheres of our lives – yes, we are now part of the digital era tupende tusipende. Even the government is not being left behind. The Auditor General has just installed some KES 100 million top of the range software that provides information on the government’s (including counties’) real time financial transactions. It is not a matter of auditing or reporting on historical issues anymore.
Ideally, efficient management of national resources will eventually cascade to all sectors of the economy, including those in the private sector, who may have been benefiting from the efficiency gaps. How does that affect entrepreneurship growth anyway?
Around 2007, I penned an article titled “Beware of the Chinese and other Foreign Invasions,” which was published in the daily print media (see newsletters @ www.newtimesconsultants.com). The impact of the Chinese was already being felt in some parts of Africa. They were into all sorts of business including hawking.
Though many may have perceived my predictions as futuristic, some contractors have now closed shop in Kenya. More still, there were recent demonstrations in Nairobi by hawkers, shop owners (exhibitors) and others who were seeking Government’s protection from the Chinese invaders -as I had earlier predicted. (Incidentally, during call of duty in Kinshasa, Dr Congo last year, I personally confirmed that Chinese have dominated the construction industry not just in Kenya but, the entire great lakes region).
In a nutshell, are you reading the trends attributable to your products or business cycles? What about the state of the cycles in your industry? Are you considering the tectonic shifts that could in the near future keep you in or out of business? These shifts are similar to underground movements in the earth’s structure that eventually cause earthquakes and storms.
The good news is that great opportunities always exist in challenges as many have experienced. When you can’t see or feel the opportunities of tremendous growth of your business, do not lose heart. We shall through innovative strategic thinking oriented solutions, help you make the best out of the forces of change, more particularly the prevailing and future industry as well as tectonic shifts that your business needs to immediately exploit.
