Graciously Parting With Internal Turned External Brand Ambassadors

Are you due for retirement from your employment situation, any time within the next 5 years or so?  If so, follow this script very carefully. If not, remember that retirement will still come one day upende usipende  (whether you like it or not). Thus, your preparedness on this needs  to be of great concern.

This is so because many people dread the commencement of this stage of their lives. Don’t they? That is why some end up requesting for extension of employment contracts based on all kinds of excuses. Was that not recently witnessed in one major quasi government organization?

On the other hand, some employees ensure to stay younger through manipulating their birthdays, thus extending their employment life by a few more years.  Indeed, this retirement seems to generate more fear than excitement as can now be confirmed. This may be understandable especially if some recent revelations hold true. A respected local retirement preparations organization insinuates that “people, who are ill prepared for retirement, succumb to the  associated challenges within only 3-4 years.” The situation becomes even worse, whenever it involves early retirement.  Why?

Sometimes between 2006 and 2008, I had the experience of spending some 54 training days with early retirement candidates. A certain local organization was going through a major transition. The government was privatizing this massive organization that was seemingly overwhelmed by the maintenance of numerous employees. They could not all be taken up by any or the incoming investor.

This training/consulting experience was preceded by a rigorous evaluation that included  passing a written  examination, conducted by the International Finance Corporation. This is the body that was sponsoring and supervising the pre-retirement training process. Having emerged as one of the successful candidates was quite exciting. Subsequently, the process took me on a tour of duty to the then Eastern Province, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Nairobi.

The initial engagement meanwhile, involved  wiping tears from overwhelmed employees.  It was quite a humbling experience to say the least. Imagine personally interacting with about  800 stressed up men and women (54 days accommodated 27 teams of about 30 for 2 days each ). Then, they were almost always suddenly summoned to attend the pre-retirement training process – there were no prior notices.

More still, it did not matter the age or gender. Some were still in their 20’s, whereas others were in their 50s. Nevertheless, all of them needed great care as they suddenly transited into a new life, whereby they were expected to be gainfully employed, one way or the other.

Upon wiping their tears through counseling on the changing status of the delegates’ lives, they got into situations of ably focusing into the future. How were they to organize their personal finances? What would they be doing to remain economically active throughout their remaining lives? Particularly, what business if any would they choose to venture into and why? How will they ensure that the businesses will be sustainable into the future?

As a firm, we have since been passionate in providing incisive insights into the answers to these inevitable questions and more, especially inspired by that experience.  We have further been urging employers to help their retiring employees as they successively transit into the retirement phase of their lives.

In fact, it is socially responsible to do so, at the minimum.  Notably, employers have invaluably benefited from the efforts of these retirees, especially during their prime years. Is re-tooling them with new skills and attitudes not a small sacrifice of giving them a warm send off? Above all, is it not a gracious parting with internal turned external brand ambassadors?
