Quality Education Key To Transformation
Probably it has not occurred to most Kenyans that the expiry date for Vision 2030 is only 15 years away. As is well known, the vision is driven by three pillars which are social, economic and political transformation.
The fact that there is heightened Infrastructural development in line with the aspirations of the vision 2030 can’t be disputed. Modern roads, railways, fiber optic cabling and technological advancements such as the laptop project for schools no doubt represent the focus on the expected gains with respect to the economic pillar. But, are those developments adequate in bringing the expectations of vision 2030?
The right answers may not be forthcoming until we reflect on the social development aspects of the population. The school system is no doubt producing a more educated populace. What is in doubt is whether the education achieved meets the required standards that would help in exploiting the opportunities attributable to continued infrastructural development.
We could therefore end up with high class infrastructural development that is not matched by the desired skills and attitudes. Why so? Ideally, the social aspects of our country have not changed much since the advent of the 21st Century, some 16 years ago. The education system is still geared towards preparing students for formal employment, just as was the case in the 20th Century. That applies to both the secondary and university education.
It is not unusual to find graduates with numerous educational certificates which are not supported by requisite knowledge that can be put into expected use in the employment situation. It’s no wonder then that more than 50 per cent of graduates end up becoming unemployable. Worse still, more than 80 per cent of those employed are just hustling in the workplace unable to unleash their full potential. Under the circumstances, the employers are unhappy of the results whereas the employees are discontented with the resultant rewards.
A casual enquiry on the matter reveals that policy makers are aware that the standards of education are seriously wanting. This is especially supported by the continually rising demand for degrees or certificates in a paper driven nation. Alongside, universities have continued sprouting in all corners of the nation. Tertiary colleges have not been left intact to serve the earlier intended purposes. Majority of them have been converted into universities, leaving the country with little or no middle level colleges for those who do not qualify for university education. Whenever demand outstrips supply in any situation, the quality will always be compromised.
This situation is untenable and could eventually explode if left to persist. Continued unemployability of the youth is what leads to radicalization, especially amongst the aggressive lot. The rest get frustrated and end up venturing into drugs and other social disruptions, situations that may cause trouble not only to the social pillar of Vision 2030 but also the well being of the nation.
The prevailing situation calls for drastic review of the focus on the social pillar of vision 2030. There has been talk of reforming the education curriculum, which is commendable, especially if appropriately executed. Also, there has been recent news of freezing the expansion of universities and registration of new ones. That brings forth some outright questions nevertheless. How long will it take for these combined interventions to yield the desired results? Secondly, will they automatically result to improved quality of graduates?
Unofficial estimates indicate that any change may yield noticeable results after not less than 15 years. That leaves us with a major concern; how then will the continued unemployability of graduates and widespread mediocre performance be addressed in the short term?
That is where the training industry comes into play. Solutions will no doubt come from talented and experienced professional trainers, particularly those who have not become victims of the societal dictates of elaborate greed and sleaze. These trainers are able to change the strategic direction of individuals, organizations and the national situation as well. They are able to influence change of behavior of individuals, many of whom form teams. Many teams obviously form organizations, which in turn form a nation. Indeed, the trainers can be indisputable change agents capable of bringing the desirable transformation that this nation greatly craves for.
The goals of Vision 2030 are therefore definitely achievable but only when the right approaches are employed.
The greatest of them all is uplifting the population from 20th Century thinking to 21st Century paradigms. The same involve paradigm shift actions that promote the concepts of quality individuals as well as quality products in line with the dynamics of the 21st Century.
Naturally, quality graduates especially, are unlikely to be associated with unemployability or mediocre performance. When unable to secure rewarding jobs, they create their own. That situation of quality which may eventually evolve into a culture c o u l d easily be achieved through involving the right experts in empowering the stakeholders in the education sector and elsewhere. Imperatively, there may be need to expend time and efforts towards implementing paradigm shift actions whose results may not only be certain, but also likely to be immediate.
