The Route Towards Greatness May Not Be Obvious to All Individuals and Organizations, Thus..

During the week of 2nd June I was temporarily based in Kinshasa the capital of DR Congo conducting an international training assignment. But, upon arrival there, I unsuccessfully attempted to upload and dispatch this piece, which I had written during the 3 hours or so flight. I had been inspired to write upon reading something to the effect that success is an inborn matter, which may not be taught or coached. Whether that is true or not is a matter of conjecture but, an experience preceding the travel could probably shed some light.
The same is related to a pleasant visit by Imelda (not her real name) our one time training participant. Precisely, the course was our Staff Motivation and Capacity Building Strategy Training Solution, which had a few years ago, been conducted for a corporate body. It is the first step in our bottom up organizational transformational solutions. But, this time however, Imelda’s mission was different. She felt the need to say thank you for having experienced invaluable transformation, courtesy of this unique training. How?
Sometime earlier, Imelda had been a frustrated person at work. She was easily irritable and frequently quarreling with her colleagues for no good reasons. She felt that they were looking down upon her for the junior job that she had dutifully executed for a whole five years. And upon expiry of those years, she had confronted her bosses and demanded to be promoted immediately. Her reasoning was that she had after all completed 5 years in one grade. She was therefore ‘entitled’ to automatic promotion. Was she not?
Obviously, this was tantamount to insubordination of the highest degree, which could easily have resulted into instant dismissal in some organizations. But, Imelda was lucky. She only got strong verbal warnings from her boss. Strangely however, she was after a few months pleasantly surprised when she eventually got the promotion that she had ignorantly treated as an ‘entitlement.’
It is soon after the said training that Imelda realized her goofs. She knew that it is unlikely for her to get promotion from the new position, any time in the future. She also understood that she can not any more confront her bosses on the same, no matter how long she marks time.
Nonetheless, she was excited upon realizing that there is greatness in her, which was still untapped, but ready for the same. In her 30s, Imelda is now proudly pursuing a university degree course that is not only associated with her new duties, but also an area from which she derives great passion.
Surprisingly, Imelda has become a model of change and great inspiration to her colleagues, most of whom were also part of the organizational change training. Apparently many of them have joined the personal development train, to the amazement of the organization’s HR department that ironically has not had any hand, in these recent employee trends.
Further, enquiries have indicated that Imelda’s workplace has never before witnessed the organizational unity of purpose and direction that is now prevalent. Everybody is busy and preoccupied with the search for personal greatness. Ultimately, the same motivation leads into organizational greatness too.
There are less organizational conflicts even from those who were earlier perceived as difficult employees. Actually, the organization has become like a conveyor belt, whereby every process successively precedes or succeeds the other, with little need for supervision efforts. The productivity functions now seem to be mechanized even where technology is not involved.
Achievement of organizational goals is no longer an uphill task. Thus, close to 3 years since the organizational transformation solutions of Imelda’s workplace, things seemed to have consistently changed from good to better if not best. Indeed, the organizational wheel is moving fast and with less and less hindrances, despite the external influences brought about by inevitable change dynamics.
Ideally, organizational transformation may only be preceded by that of the human element. It is cool to come up with the most advanced technology, facilities and resources. Realistically however, it is the human capital that will make the difference with regard to extent of achievement of the desired success.
More still, it will happen effortlessly and at once, upon embracing the right value based transformative training/consulting/solutions. Now, could it perhaps be necessary to consider the extent of achievement of full performance potential in our varying situations? If we are not achieving this potential, do we know exactly what the hindrances could be? If we know, it is best to proactively try to eliminate them. If we are not aware of them, it is best to find out and take proactive action, lest we are left behind by the progress train.
