After a whole 44 years of playing football without a break, Manchester City Football Club of UK has finally lifted the league cup. Forget that the 2 winning goals against Queen Park Rangers were scored within the last 90 seconds of extra time. The fact that the cup was won on a superior goal difference compared with those of Manchester United, the seemingly bitter rivals, is also neither here nor there. Read more [...]

Organizations are better off venturing into the social media than avoiding the same. Further, those that survive the social media upheavals in the next 5 years or so have great chances of venturing into greatness. That must have been the most obvious conclusion for anybody who like me, attended a recent management forum, whereby, dynamics of the social media were discussed. On hand to deliberate on this increasingly important and dynamic communication medium was Sunny Bindra (a Management expert and newspaper columnist), Joe Mucheru (the Google Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa chief) and Al Kags (a local social media guru). The continuing occurrences in the Public Relations Industry in Kenya have inadvertently vindicated some observations that I have made in different forums. When interacting with senior organizational staff, I have always reiterated that employees can be double edged competitors. Further, I have insisted that great care needs to be taken towards ensuring not only high level of staff retention, but also brand integration with respective organizations. Needless, to venture into the intricacies, these internal stakeholders, are important organizational players who are notably privy to organizational secrets and all that matters in doing business. Are you one of those born just about the same time as Kenya? Alternatively, did you by any chance finish schooling (up-to University) before 1992, when Kenya started gaining the second liberation? If your answer is in the affirmative, then it is certainly you that I am seeking to engage. My interest in you is based on the fact that we all grew up experiencing similar challenges, in the same hostile environment whether rural or urban based. And that environment made us become what we (mostly) are rather than what we ought to have become. Read more [...]

How your organization relates with Generation Y employees has never been as crucial as it is today. In Kenya particularly, the Youth comprise more than 70% of the national population. Naturally, the same group forms the larger chunk of organizational employees. It is no wonder then that there have been incessant media reports mostly highlighting the challenges associated with generation Y that is largely in this category of the population. Apparently, many interested parties are concerned especially on how this generation is influencing the workplace direction. This is so especially in seemingly complacent organizations, yet to embrace the dynamics of new global organizational culture. Nothing demonstrates this more than some recent interactions with some two HR practitioners. Read more [...]

Whoever said that money is a requirement in entrepreneurship growth should now be revisiting the assertion. That may seemingly be so if some interesting recent developments are anything to go by. Indeed, they have vindicated my earlier assertions on entrepreneurship. Money as many Kenyans would want us to believe may not be a key entrepreneurship challenge in this country. Imagine, the Government is now busy trying to improve loan uptake especially amongst Youth and Women entrepreneurs. Indeed, trainers and mentors have in the recent past been dispatched to each and every constituency only for that purpose.

Wherever you are, I can almost bet, that you intend to one time, venture into business if not there as yet. As an experienced marketing practitioner, trainer of even trainers and passionate change agent, I come across many people variously wanting to acquire one or more forms of wealth creation. Some are on track only requiring guidance, whereas others are still finding their way. Apparently, invaluable marketing and selling skills even at their basic form are vital in almost every situation in life, as we strive to achieve this desired wealth creation. This is so because we all to need to understand and package our products and services appropriately. And that is where most of our challenges lie. Read more [...]

Undoubtedly, most CEOs will quite agree with Seni Adetu, of East Africa Breweries Limited, whose ideas I interacted with during a recent management forum. This CEO, who has been at the helm in different multinational brands in the last 10 years, is certainly in a class of his own. It is no wonder then that East African Breweries has taken over the charts as East and Central Africa’s most capitalized company. And what has been Seni Adetu’s secret in continually growing the East African giant known more for persistently flooding the region with different brands of frothy waters? Read more [...]

Finally, Kenya has realized the existence of oil deposits. Indeed, that is very good music for our ears, even if the drilling may only materialize after 5 years. Never mind that commercial viability has not been established as yet. Even more concern is on how long this invaluable resource will be exploited for the benefit of this great nation. Additionally, when will the benefits cascade to each one of us as individuals, if at all? Read more [...]

This week, my attention is completely stuck on the continuing exploits of Chief Kariuki of Nakuru County. This is the administrator who has become a darling of both the National and International Media for good reasons. On the other hand, he has naturally become a counter-terrorist of those who are fond of reaping from where they have not sawn. That is besides those who derive pleasure in just terrorizing the society.
